5/24/2008 - McColloch Wins Wild Sprint 100 Feature
Sometimes in racing it’s better to be lucky then good, and Saturday night Nick McColloch was both, as he picked up his second feature event win of the 2008 season in what was no doubt the wildest race of the season.
On the drop of the green flag it was the outside row getting the jump led by Gregg Hanson.
Hanson wouldn’t lead long as the sixth starting Tim MacLaughlin shot into the lead early as he found some space through traffic.
At the same time Nick McColloch was picking off cars and was in second on the sixth lap when the first caution waved for a stalled Jim Phifer.
On the restart, MacLaughlin led with a lap car in between himself, McColloch, Tony Gaoiran, and rookie Denmarck Juan.
As McColloch went to the high side coming out of turn four to clear the lap car, contact was made sending McColloch and Cameron Haney into the field, bringing out another caution.
McColloch would be able to restart, but Haney was done for the night.
When action returned MacLaughlin would lead his teammate for the night, Gaoiran, Juan, Gregg Hanson, Gary Eckman, and McColloch.
As the race got going MacLaughlin and Gaoiran distanced themselves from the field and, McColloch worked his way back into the third spot and hoped for a caution.
As the front duo reached lap traffic on the 13th lap, the two leaders made contact, and the second running Gaoiran went sliding threw the infield nearly tipping over, while MacLaughlin was lucky to keep his machine running and assume the lead.
With seven laps to go Gaoiran was able to tag the rear of the field and try to work his way back into the lead pack.
On the restart MacLaughlin flexed his muscles, and took off from the pack, as Gaoiran picked off cars and was in the third spot, notably behind the lead cars.
As the white flag waved MacLaughlins’ car noticeably lost power, and his straight away lead on McColloch quickly evaporated.
Coming out of turn two McColloch was able to pass the #99 car and go on to pick up the popular win.
MacLaughlin was able to hang on to second, as Gaoiran grabbed third, and the rookie, Juan, snagged the fourth spot.
In heat race action MacLaughlin and McColloch both grabbed wins.
The Sprint 100’s will have a 3 week break, before returning to Marysville Raceway Park June 21, 2008. (P.Petersen)
5/17/2008 - Kenny Bair Scores 2nd Consecutive SORA Feature Event Win
Woodlands Kenny Bair picked up his second consecutive SORA feature event victory Saturday night at Marysville Raceway Park aboard the Kellyco Racing #19.
The only catch is that Bair’s last victory came in 2005 when he was a substitute driver for an injured Tony Gaoiran.
None the less Bair showed he hasn’t missed a beat in his three year hiatus, as he managed to clean sweep the night’s event as he also picked up his heat race win in his return.
The initial green flag saw third starting Gregg Hanson climb over pole sitter Cameron Haney’s left rear wheel sending Hanson sliding through the infield to negate the start.
Hanson would restart and tag the rear of the field moving the inside row up.
Once the race got under way Haney got the jump going into turn one, but his lead was short lived as 5th Starting PJ Petersen, and 7th starting Nick McColloch quickly grabbed the first two spots on the opening circuit.
McColloch would then overhaul Petersen and distance himself from the field as Bair quickly moved into the second spot, and Tim MacLaughlin quickly put himself in the lead mix as well.
Bair proved to be the class of the field on this night as he quickly reeled in McColloch and grabbed the lead, as his teammate for the night, MacLaughlin, also was able to get the spot from McColloch to move into second.
On the 10th lap as McColloch tried to get back in the top two, contact ensued with slower traffic and sent McColloch spinning in turns three and four.
McColloch bounced back and got himself back into the top three, but on this night the Kellyco Racing team proved to be too tough as Bair motored to the popular win going away, while MacLaughlin settled for second, McColloch grabbed the third spot, John Cardoni grabbed the fourth spot, and Petersen rounded out the top five.
However when the race was completed Cardoni did not report to the scales and was DQ’d from the feature event moving Petersen into 4th.
In preliminary action Bair, and McColloch picked up the wins.

4/17/2008 - McColloch Clean Sweeps, Grabs 1st Feature Event of Season
The 2008 SORA season continued Saturday night with the second of 12 events scheduled at Marysville Raceway Park with Nick McColloch sweeping the night.
With the waving of the initial green flag it was pole sitter PJ Petersen jumping out to the jump and grabbing the early advantage
Petersen set the early pace and had a nice lead for the first four laps, until the only caution of the race flew over the speedway.
Petersen led to field to the restart, but the hard charging Tim MacLaughlin, and McColloch were now in second and third right on the leaders bumper.
Petersen was able to fend off the duo for a few laps, and was able to negate the charges of MacLaughlin who tried to get under the leader.
On the seventh circuit McColloch elected to go to the high side to challenge for the lead as he entered turn three, and completed the pass coming off turn four, making it a three wide pass as MacLaughlin attempted to get under Petersen.
McColloch was able to get away from the two as the race for second got interesting.
Two laps later MacLaughlin was able to grab the second spot and set his sites on the leader.
The top three did a nice job of getting through traffic, but as the race went on McColloch and MacLauhglin motored away, with McColloch hanging on to get the popular win.
Petersen was able to hang on to third after fending off John Cardoni who had a nice run though the field to get fourth, and rookie Dave English rounded out the top five.
In preliminary action McColloch, and Maclaughlin grabbed wins, while McColloch was the best in the dash, solidifying his sweep of the night.
SORA takes three weeks off before returning to MRP on May 17, 2008. Be sure to check out website for results.
4/12/2008 - MacLauglin Picks Up Opening Night
2007 Champion Tim MacLaughin wasted no time in returning to championship form in 2008, as he picked up the opening night feature event Saturday night at Marysville Raceway Park.
From initial hot laps, the two fastest cars of the night were by far MacLaughlin and the #17 of Nick McColloch.
With a complete inversion of the heat race finishes determining the line up for the feature event, the quick duo lined up on the outside of the third and fourth rows.
With the waving of the initial green flag McColloch went high and began picking off cars.
At the same time MacLaughlin was behind him picking off the same cars, and keeping pace, never letting McColloch out of his sites.
The duo made it interesting as they split the second place running Gary Eckman, and then race leader Gregg Hanson.
As McColloch elected to go to the top of the race track MacLaughlin used a low side pass to over take him for the lead.
On the sixth lap, the first caution waved as the #86 of Chad Thompson was facing the wrong direction in turn four.
On the restart MacLaughin motored away, as McColloch attempted to real him in, but was unsuccessful.
The race went for three laps until the second caution waved for Cameron Haney, who had made hard contact with the turn four wall and ended his night.
On this restart McColloch hung right with MacLaughlin and actually had the advantage coming out of turn two, but MacLaughin was able to get back by him down the backstretch, and getting into turn three.
On lap 13 the caution waved again for rookie Dave English, who spun out in turn three, and at this time the checker flag waved over the speedway giving the win to MacLaughin.
McColloch took second position as Gregg Hanson, Jim Phifer, and Gary Eckman rounded out the top five.
In heat race action Phifer and MacLaughlin picked up the popular wins.
The Sprint 100’s will be back in action again Saturday April 19, 2008 at Marysville Raceway Park in Marysville Calif. (P.Petersen)
2/29/2008 - SORA locked and Loaded for 2008 Season:
All Teams, Fans, Friends in the First Race for FREE!
After last seasons open invitational race debacle, Marysville Raceway Park promoter Paul Hawes has decided to act in good faith.
Hawes has decided that ALL Sprint 100 teams, fans and friends will be let in the pits at no cost at SORA’s season opening race April 12th.
This is an excellent opportunity for fans to get a feel for what happens in the pits at a $37 value!
With that said, April 12th will kick off the 2008 season for the Sprint 100 Racing association, and it will be the first of 12 races for the association at MRP.
After the final flag flew over the speedway last year the aforementioned Hawes has been busy at the track.
What used to be work area located beyond turns one and two is now racing surface with a crash wall to accompany it.
The front stretch has been re configured and a new front stretch wall has been assembled making MRP much bigger and faster.
Headlining the competitors for 2008 will be 2007 champion Tim MacLaughlin.
MacLaughlin too has been busy this off season as he has assembled a second car to his stable that will be wheeled by Rookie of the Year contender David English.
With the assembly of one two car team, three time champion Tony Gaoiran and Joe Love Racing have also added another car to stable which will be piloted by Gaoiran’s son Denmark, making the 2008 Rookie of the Year race very entertaining.
This season ahead should be a competitive one as a new format will be put into place calling for a complete inversion of the season long standings to set the main event line up, thus meaning charges to the front will be a nightly routine.
It also marks the first season in several years that multiple champions will be in competition with each other since the last driver to defeat Gaoiran retired after he claimed gold three years ago.
Other competitors expected to return for 2008 are Nick McColloch, Chad Thompson, Cameron Haney, President Gregg Hanson, Vern Hickman, 2007 Rookie of the Year PJ Petersen, and a handful of other.s.
There also may be a few surprise drivers in store, so with the only cost for the first race being gasoline, it should be worth the trip.
